Can your fancy iPhone squish up into a compact, portable ball or stretch out into a full-sized keyboard? That's part of the promise/tease of a newly announced joint nanotechnology project between Nokia and the University of Cambridge. Called Morph, the technology is working on turning a fiber similar to spider silk into the basis for all manner of flexible, shape-shifting gear.
Morph-based handsets, besides assuming numerous forms, theoretically would clean themselves, recharge by solar energy, be transparent where that helps and much more. Nokia hopes to have handsets incorporating Morph on the market in seven years. Watch the video for more.
We've seen extravagant iPod docks before, but this Krell and MartinLogan "ElectroKID" bundle put together by the folks at Absolute Sounds makes just about all those other pretenders pale in comparison. At the heart of things here is the Krell KID iPod dock, which boasts " top-quality preamp circuitry" and is also available separately for a mere £1,350 (or about $2,700). That gets teamed up with a pair of MartinLogan Purity floorstanding speakers (£2,390, or $4,800 on their own), which each pack their own 200W power amp and, as you can see, make quite the statement in any room you place 'me in. If that's sounds like the missing piece to your iPod puzzle, you can get the complete system now for £3,740, or just over $7,500 (that's right, not even a discount to entice you).
The most expensive, carefully designed, and complicated solar panels in the world operate at about 40% efficiency. That means that, for every bit of sunlight that hits the panel, only 40% of it is turned into electricity.
Scientists think that this is just about as good as silicon panels can do and are now looking at ways to make it cheaper, instead of making them more efficient. But suddenly, from nowhere, comes Steven Novack of the Idaho National Laboratories with an inexpensive, foldable solar panel that may turn out to be up to 80% efficient.
Sanyo has built an ark for the solar century – an impressive 630 kW solar-collecting building that boasts over 5,000 solar panels and kicks off over 500,000 kWh of energy per year. Even more outstanding is the fact that most of the monocrystalline modules used on the Solar Ark were factory rejects headed to the scrap pile. Located next to Sanyo’s semiconductor factory in Gifu, Japan, the Solar Ark stands as one of the best examples of building integrated PV design to date.

The company says that, in a first for a humanoid, the robot has convertible legs which allow it to walk on two legs or roll about on either two or four wheels.

The LEED certified 22-story headquarters and laboratory buildings will be home to the center of excellence for biotechnology education and research, with two connected buildings oriented to maximize day-lighting and views while minimizing solar gain. It will also integrate a 500,000 sq ft animal reserve for indigenous conservation and wildlife protection. The design comes form design firm CUH2A, and is scheduled for completion in 2009.
